Every April, Catalans from all across fill the streets of towns and villages to celebrate Sant Jordi, one of the most enduring and loved traditions in Catalan culture.
The legend of Sant Jordi tells the story of a knight in shiny armour that slays a dragon that has captured a princess. The story tells that a red rose bush grew from the dragon’s blood, and that Sant Jordi plucked a flower and gave it to the princess.
In Catalonia, Sant Jordi is the day we celebrate love, friendship, culture and tradition. A red rose is given to the women we care for, partners, sisters, friends and mothers. And because Sant Jordi, not by coincidence, is celebrated during the World Book Day, women traditionally gift a book to the man they care for too. But as long as it comes from the heart, it really does not matter much what you gift to whom. Culture, love and friendship are universal.
Once again, this year, the Delegation of the Government of Catalonia to the UK is organizing Sant Jordi at Camden Market. This open-air public fair will bring together Catalan and British organisations, each with their own stalls to celebrate the day. The event will also feature cultural performances, including human towers, choirs, and traditional dancers.
Join us at Camden Market on Sunday the 26th of April to celebrate Sant Jordi. This a free festival and open to all, no need to book.
